INTERVIEW: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM AUS FASHION WEEK 2021

I believe we are going to see a lot of natural texture and movement. Less product, more diffusing.

After a year off, the beauty and madness of Afterpay Australian Fashion Week is once again upon us.

From the looks storming the runway to the style on the street, this all out celebration of self-expression and individuality was sorely missed by the fashionistas of Australia in 2020… So you can bet they’ll be back with a vengeance, and snapping up a storm from May 31!

Back for another year as Official Hair Tool Partner is ghd, sure to bring the heat backstage and style up some incredible looks to top the trends we’re sure to see marching the catwalk. The partnership will see ghd Creative Artists taking over backstage with their talent and creating looks for six key runway shows on the schedule, as well as celebrating their 20th anniversary with an impressive ‘Mirror Me’ installation.

ghd Creative Artist (and all out hairdressing queen!) Natalie Anne for one is thrilled to be backstage for Team ghd once again, and spoke us through what to expect from this year’s eagerly anticipated AAFW!

1. What are the key hair trends that we can expect to see at Fashion Week this year, and what tips do you have for achieving them?

I believe this year we are going to see less looks and more individual personalities come through hair this season.

Being at a few of the hair trials and seeing a few of the girls that are being cast, there are some seriously cool haircuts walking this year.

I believe we are going to see a lot of natural texture and movement. Less product, more diffusing. The ghd helios hairdryer with all the attachments will be a large part of my education this year.

 2. Given that we missed out on Fashion Week in 2020, what do you think this will mean for the looks we can expect this year? Ie. Do you think those in attendance will have kept their looks lowkey following COVID, or be back with a vengeance and dial up the drama?

Definitely not low key… Thank god for that! If I had a year off and girls wanted beachy lived-in vibes I probably would have checked out. Most of the guests that I’m styling are wanting something super extra, or extremely refined and shiny.

I will be exaggerating a lot of lengths with 26-30 inch custom lengths, and loads of oil wet textures. I’m so excited to pull out my ghd max styler for these!

 3. Any tips for those looking to keep their hair looking sharp all day at Fashion Week? Extensions are amazing for sustainable shapes, and locking in those shapes is easy with ghd perfect ending final fix hairspray and curly ever after curl hold spray.

Afterpay Australian Fashion Week (AAFW) will take over Carriageworks from May 31 – June 4.
