When on set you really must have salon supplies, a wig shop, a craft shop and accessories pop-up – all compacted into a well-edited organised zip-lock bag situation.
Brad Ngata, De Lorenzo Ambassador
Hes won all the big awards and continues to drop jaws with inventive (always fabulous) hair and interior directives. Brad Ngata is Australian hairdressing’s original ‘darling,’ and is now elevating the editorial stance of fellow icon De Lorenzo as the brand’s latest Ambassador. We get inside the high hair heroes’ kit; sparkly, and seriously organised.
TJ: What does your kit say about you as an artist?
BN: My kit has many personalities depending on the job at task. My kit would reveal that I am resourceful, creative and organised.
TJ: Strangest thing in your kit?
BN: I have many grades of glitter in my kit and a portable leaf blower, quite a dangerous combo!
TJ: Absolute can’t-kit-without products?
BN: As a session guy it’s a simple regime of products: I need glue, so gels, fixing mist and pastes. I need a bulker – so texture sprays, powders, sea salt sprays. And I need a shiner – silicones, sheens and hair spray … and all sorts of wigs, extensions and wefts.
TJ: Strangest thing you’ve ever applied to hair?
BN: I love using paint, glitter, tinsel, gold leaf sequins … anything shiny, textural and dramatic.
TJ: How essential is a well-equipped kit to a solid performance on set?
BN: When on set you really must have salon supplies, a wig shop, a craft shop and accessories pop-up – all compacted into a well-edited organised zip-lock bag situation. Over the years I have found the perfect containers, bottles, make-up bags, toiletry bags … basically anything that allows me to locate exactly what I need within a single glance. Packing your kit is a science.
TJ: A hairdressers kit isn’t a hairdressers kit without …?
BN: A hairdresser’s kit isn’t a hairdresser’s kit without a well-edited, fully equipped portable hair salon.
TJ: Ultimate De Lorenzo product mix?
BN: My go-to products are De Lorenzo Elements Clay, Quicksand, Ocean Mist, Defence Thermal Spray (for protection) and Instant Rejuven8 The Ends. Essential Treatments Absorb Dry Shampoo, and of course, Elements Vapour Mist hairspray.
TJ: How does your kit look now as opposed to 10 years ago?
BN: Ten years ago my kit would have been exactly like it is now, well edited and organized.
