It’s one of the most requested looks in salon, and is forever making hottest trend lists for it’s undone cool that speaks to the effortless chicness that Paris is so revered for. This season, the ‘Parisian Shag’ has never been hotter and will take you from cocktail party to Christmas Day – all the while exhibiting that effortless glamour (with a twist of rock and roll) that the shag provides.
Inspired by the cool French style of Brigitte Bardot, Aveda’s Senior Vice President of Global Artistry Antoinette Beenders has interpreted this classic look for the Aveda Holiday campaign. Here, Antoinette provides her insight on this look of the moment, and how to achieve the perfect Parisian Shag while incorporating Aveda’s invati advanced™ thickening foam and smooth infusion™ perfect blow dry for maximized volume and playfulness.
TJM: Describe ‘The Parisian Shag’?
AB: Rock and roll, French, sexy, volume, layers, glamour with a 1970s lens.
TJM: What or who was the inspiration for the ‘Parisian Shag’?
AB: Brigitte Bardot. The idea was to give this chic model a Brigitte Bardot vibe. When the model, Hsu, showed up to the holiday shoot with her rock and roll boyfriend, I was immediately inspired by her edgy style and knew to give her a rock and roll shag that was influenced by Brigitte.
TJM: What makes a shag distinctly ‘Parisian’ and different from French shag?
AB: A French shag has continuous layers, the Parisian Shag has more disconnected layers which adds more volume and energy to the hair. In the French shag everything is connected – continuous layers. Parisian shag is like two haircuts in one. To add volume, playfulness, and sexiness, I put more layers.
TJM: How can you achieve this look?
AB: To achieve this look, follow the below six simple steps:
1. Section Hair
2. Cut perimeter to desired length
3. Cut fringe section
4. Disconnect the sides
5. Disconnect the back
6. Blow dry using invati advanced™ thickening foam and smooth infusion™ perfect blow dry
