A MINUTE WITH MAL MASCI

Boasting a cavalcade of accolades – and talent in spades – Mal Masci is no doubt one of the industry’s finest hair stylists. We caught up with the Revlon Professional Ambassador following her Issue 5 Cover Shoot with Travis Bandiera for Revlon Professional.

Tell us about your most recent collab with Revlon Professional and The Journal.

MM: I love working with Revlon and The Journal; the inspiration and motivation I get from working with these two teams is phenomenal. I’m humbled to be part of this dynamic group collaboration.

Can you talk us through the final looks?

MM: The looks were very progressive. For the hair, we came up with a beautiful blend of peachy blondes, gold blondes, and whitened blondes – married together with cool blues and greens, with beautiful honey highlights. For makeup, a nude lipstick was used, with a whisper of pink and thick gloss over the top. Eyes were transparent, and face was bare with a healthy glow. The styling blew me away; we had suits made, big jackets, long culottes and unisex shirts – all in pastel tones.

How do you typically go about creating the perfect shade of blonde for each individual client?

MM: When we’re creating a custom shade of blonde for each client, skin tone is a huge factor. I believe anyone can go blonde – if Beyoncé can do it, anyone can! We are lucky these days to have so many innovative colour techniques – such as balayage – which enable women with darker skin to have a more sophisticated tone. We’ve just discovered that 43% of women who change their natural hair colour, choose to go blonde – that’s huge!

Tell us about your relationship with Revlon Professional; what aspects of Revlon’s approach resonate with your own ethos?

MM: Masci Hair & Spa have been with Revlon Professional for 15 years. My family and I love the brand’s down-to-earth approach to business. Revlon are an unpretentious group
