They say looking into a woman’s handbag is like looking into her brain …  a hairdressers’ kit is the same but on steroids.

With two new sponsors (Seamless 1 Hair Extensions and JOICO) to lean on, and an ‘around the world’ trip of a lifetime to come, this years’ Australian FAME Team have truly got it made. Here’s a little insight into the kits and tricks that got them over the line in 2019.

CHRISTOPHER BYRNE

TJ: What does your kit say about you as a hairdresser/artist?

CB: Consciously CHAOTIC.

TJ: What is the strangest thing in your kit?

CB: Loose diamanté chain trimmings from KELA Charms.

TJ: The first thing you ever bought for your kit was?

CB: A mixed bristle Mason Pearson, and it’ll forever be the love of my life.

TJ: If you could look inside the kit of any Hair Director in the world, whose would it be?

CB: Holli Smith and Gary Gill.

TJ: Your absolute ‘can’t kit without’ product?

CB: evo’s Shebang-a-bang & L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Transformer Lotion.

LAURA SPINNEY.

TJ: What does your kit say about you as a hairdresser/artist?

LS: All the gear, no idea! jks. Tools are such a prevalent part of what we do. Travelling to New York Fashion Week and noticing that my kit looked very similar to those who were also working with Eugene Souleiman, was a good sign. Also, a sha-mozzle but ready for anything!

TJ: What is the strangest thing in your kit?

LS: To anyone but a hairdresser, our kits would all look super strange. I have various Gaffa tapes, sharps, needles and threads. I also carry a dolly head with no ears when travelling; this comes in handy if I need to refine any looks I’m working on. But I always keep a spare pair of underpants just in case…

TJ: The first thing you ever bought for your kit was?

LS: Irons and a blow dryer, but what changed my idea of a ‘kit’ was when one of my beautiful clients bought me a Mason Pearson. I instantly felt I had a super power and understood the difference of quality.

TJ: If you could look inside the kit of any Hair Director in the world, whose would it be?

LS: I’d love to sit and talk shop/peep the kit of Gary Gill. He creates the most amazing textures, looks and in my opinion is really pushing the boundaries. He just owns his own personal style. Not to mention he always replies to my DM’s and mentions EVERYONE who works on his shows with him.

TJ: Your absolute ‘can’t kit without’ product?

This is such a hard question. I think evo Haze is one of my personal favourites because I’m a hardcore texture junkie. I’ve somehow become a hoarder of these.

CHARLENE FERNANDEZ:

TJ: What does your kit say about you as a hairdresser/artist?

CF: I’m ready for anything!

TJ: What is the strangest thing in your kit?

CF: Sex (bondage) tape.

TJ: The first thing you ever bought for your kit was?

CF: A Hairdryer and brushes … I couldn’t have been more excited.

TJ: If you could look inside the kit of any Hair Director in the world, whose would it be?

CF: Eugene Souleiman’s. I know hes got a few suitcases worth of kit, but I’d spend all the necessary time to go through it all.

TJ: Your absolute ‘can’t kit without’ product?

CF: evo Builders Paradise: Versatile, effective and guaranteed to deliver!

WILLIAM WEBB

TJ: What does your kit say about you as a hairdresser/artist?

WW: Organised chaos. I try and keep it as tidy as possible but I pick up random things all over the place (that I think might be interesting to use in hair) … I do know where everything is most of the time.

TJ: What is the strangest thing in your kit?

WW: I have a few weird things but the strangest thing is probably plastic sheeting I got in a gift box once. I thought the colour and texture were cool and that I might use it one day.

TJ: The first thing you ever bought for your kit was?

WW: A medium metal round brush and it’s probably my most used piece of equipment.

TJ: If you could look inside the kit of any Hair Director in the world, whose would it be?

WW: There are so many I find fascinating. They say looking into a woman’s handbag is like looking into her brain …  a hairdressers’ kit is the same but on steroids. If I could only pick one it would be Pablo Kuemin – his work is mind blowing and I’d love to see what’s in his kit.

TJ: Your absolute ‘can’t kit without’ product?

WW: evo Builders Paradise. It’s so versatile and perfect for session work. Also, Wella Professionals EIMI Perfect Setting Spray to build upon.
