INTERVIEW: ANGELO SEMINARA

It’s so important to listen well. Clients can often surprise you with what they’re prepared to do; they look to you to help focus and refine their ideas.

Angelo Seminara

Angelo Seminara; unarguably one of our industry’s most pivotal figures.

4 x British Hairdresser of the Year, Artistic Director for Davines and industry trailblazer, Angelo is every bit the modern creative, challenging notions of hair and art with each and every game-changing collection.

We caught up with Senior Seminara to chat about this year’s autumn hair trends, style muses, and what’s next for Davines in 2018. (Spoiler alert: an exciting new project is on the horizon..)

What’s been happening in the world of Angelo Seminara?

AS: I’m super-busy, as always, working on educational programmes, editorial shoots and fashion exhibitions. I guess my main focus just now is planning for Hair Expo in Australia, and the World-Wide Hair Tour (WWHT) happening in May in Parma, Italy – home of event creators, Davines.

Talk us through WWHT.

AS: Totally dedicated to beauty, WWHT is a great opportunity for like-minded, creative hairdressers to share trends and ideas. On stage, stylists (myself included) will share their latest insights, and a competition arena will allow hairdressers to showcase their skills in a face-off with other stylists from all over the world. There will be an amazing welcome dinner, music, networking, and lots of fun. Above all, WWHT is a get together for salons that share the same vision and ethos. It’s set to be a great three days.

What hero hair trends are you calling for Autumn 2018?

AS: The catwalks may influence autumn trends, but I feel longer hair will definitely be popular for Autumn ’18. If you look to the BAFTAs and The Oscars, most of the celebs have longer hair, worn either loose with a gentle texture, or dressed in feminine up-dos. Many women are letting their hair grow, or having extensions to enjoy longer hair quicker.

Fashions may fade, but style is eternal; who is your ultimate style muse?

AS: The houses of Gucci and Prada; I love their originality and vitality. Stella Maxwell also has incredible style.

As we enter into cooler seasons (in Australia at least!) what are your must have tips for keeping hair looking and feeling great?

AS: Be kind to your hair. Make sure you use conditioner every single time you wash your hair, and regularly have a beautiful trim in your favourite hair salon.

What hero products from the Davines range are perfect for Autumn/Winter?

AS: Silkening Oil Mist from Davines’ Your Hair Assistant collection is a multi-purpose dry oil treatment for all hair types, even the finest of hair; it makes hair soft and silky, visibly healthier and conditioned. Prep Rich Balm, also from the YHA collection, creates the best base for all styling techniques.

How do you determine the right style/hair colour for each individual client?

AS: This all rests on a really thorough consultation; you must take time to do a great consultation. Ask the client a lot of questions, and listen properly to what she is saying, as opposed to listening to what your inner voice is saying. It’s so important to listen well. Clients can often surprise you with what they’re prepared to do [with their hair]; they look to you to help focus and refine their ideas. While she’s talking, really study her appearance to see how you can create a look that balances and complements her features, and is compatible to her lifestyle and beauty regimes.

What can we expect to see in 2018 from Angelo Seminara and Davines?

AS: Well, more of what we always do – great education, beautiful imagery, developing Davines Collections and creating and delivering eco-friendly, sustainable and fabulous hair care products. We’re also planning an incredibly exciting new project – building a studio within nature… that’s all I can say for now… exciting news on the horizon!
