Let’s face it.
As our new normal continues to evolve, few facts remain consistent:
- Netflix binging is a sport
- 2020 shall be dubbed the year of DIY quarantine hair
- By the time we reach lockdown’s end, there’s sure to be (more than a couple) of colour corrections headed our way
Whether you’re pro or anti at-home colour (ours is a judgement free zone), this year has forced us all to think a little outside of the box. To pause, to take stock, to pivot, and to experiment with new and alternative ways of getting things done.
Hair colouring included.
Making a case for the (controversial) distance dye job, super-model-in-training (and avid bookworm) Kaia Gerber debuted a striking, soft pink hue to her 5.7 million instagram followers, documenting the hour-long colouring process with an abridged zoom session alongside hair icon, Guido Palau.
Guiding Kaia through the process (pun intended), Palau intently watches on as the genetically blessed model applies a pre-mixed, pink formulation (courtesy of Canadian colourist, Victoria Hunter) to her mid lengths and ends; citing Kurt Cobain has her ultimate hair muse and reflecting on her transformations to date.
“[Before recently], I’d never dyed my hair,” starts Kaia. “I’ve always wanted to have pink hair. Because my hair was brown, [I didn’t want to have to bleach it] just to go pink.” Lightening her locks from deep brown to bleached blonde over the course of a few months; the choice to go ‘antique pink’ seemed a no-brainer.
“In the span of quarantine, [I’ve done] everything that I’ve never done with my hair,” Kaia admits to Guido as she waits for her colour to process. “I was just like, ‘Okay, I’m going to get highlights; I’m going to make it blonde, and then I’m going to fully bleach it, and then I’m going to get a mullet… and now we’re pink!”
As the old adage goes: new week, new hair… in a mid-lockdown context at least.
