In case you hadn’t heard… Last month, Queen of the Bey-hive: Beyoncé Knowles, dropped an oh so gracious gift upon her bevy of loyalists. A new and exquisitely executed homage to Black culture – and evolving conversations around the depiction of Black subjects – aptly titled Black Is King. A full-length, visual album; Black Is King showcases Ms Carter in all her grandiose glory, with a meticulously curated lineup of soul-stirring anthems, sartorial master-works and (in true Beyoncé form) memorable hair moments.
Heralding the film’s debut to her 151 million Instagram followers, Bey dubbed the effort a ‘labour of love’; a spirited homage to the ‘breadth and beauty of [her] Black ancestry’ many months and motions in the making. ‘The events of 2020 have made the film’s vision and message even more relevant, as people across the world embark on a historic journey,’ she shared. ‘I believe that when Black people tell our own stories, we can shift the axis of the world and tell our REAL history of generational wealth and richness of soul that are not told in our history books.’
While the film’s political message remains ever so poignant, Black Is King also serves to reinforce Beyoncé’s status as a bonafide style and beauty icon; her garments, and culturally-sound hair looks, so too bearing witness to the singer’s self-identity and aesthetic inspirations. She adds, “with this visual album, I wanted to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message; what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy.”
Here we trace the most memorable hair moments to emerge from the exquisite, visual masterpiece that is Black Is King. Inspiration ensues.
