A congratulations is in order for Australia’s Tracey Hughes, who is the proud recipient of the first-ever “Big Shot” Award for “International Haircut of the Year” during the inaugural behindthechair’s #oneshot Hair Awards photo competition held in New Orleans on September 27th.
Presented by behindthechair.com, the world’s largest online community for hairstylists with over 1.5 million members from 90 countries across the world, the event was a who’s who of award-winning hairdressers.
The competition was conceived by behindthechair’s Founder and Creative Director Mary Rector-Gable. Rector-Gable reveals that the One Shot format—a single image shared on Instagram—reflects a more contemporary hair contest.
“In our industry, and in the art world, we have always celebrated photographic images one shot at a time. I wanted to create a contest which offered complete transparency- where everyone in the hair world could visibly see what work had been entered and not have entries hidden behind some firewall. We took it a step further and also handpicked about 100 of the best hairdressers in the world to vote on the BIG SHOT categories, which included world-wide hair award winners, iconic platform educators and fashion and session stylists.”
More than 47,000 photos were submitted for the awards program. #oneshot entries were submitted in two main categories—Big Shots, for work created in a photo studio, and Hot Shots, for real hair behind the chair.
Tracey couldn’t be happier with her achievement and describes the experience as an ‘honour’.
“BTC have pioneered a competition for all levels of stylists to enter that is truly outstanding. It was very overwhelming to accept this award with so many entrants at such a high standard”, says Tracey.
Next year’s #ONE SHOT awards will take place on Sunday, September 25 during behindthechair’s COLOR, Cut & Style program in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, USA.
