Reigning British Hairdresser of the Year Sally Brooks has produced a new industry focused documentary, ‘Journey to My Destination’.
Like fingerprints, we all have a unique intelligence and innate talents that are tailored specifically to each and every one of us. To be intelligent is something so variable and open to interpretation. You can be book smart or street smart, have incredible emotional intelligence or be a savant in a specialised field.
Societally, however, we have deemed an aptitude for mathematics, science and literature and the ability to speak multiple languages more valuable; disproportionately giving credence to these markers of intelligence and subsequently undervaluing creativity.
Enter Sally Brooks. British Hairdresser of the Year for the two years running, Brooks first noticed this lack of creative appreciation in the absence of emerging talent in the hair industry. In an industry that tops the list of happiest working environments and has an overflow of opportunities for apprenticeships, she was startled by the dwindling numbers of new generation hairdressers entering the industry.
Being able to think outside of the box and bring fantastical ideas to life with your hands is a valued commodity in the hair industry. Brooks sought to promote this with an in-depth documentary covering why hairdressing isn’t a fallback option or ‘second-best’ career; highlighting that it is a rewarding career packed with opportunity development in an industry that grows with you.
Teaming up with barber and videographer, Gabriel Maciuca, Brooks traverses the potential highlights of the profession, interviewing the top names in the industry asking them to share their experiences in the hair world. She discloses her own personal account as to what it takes to make it, giving valuable insight that can be translated across creative professions.
