COVERSHOOT: COLOUR AS PERFORMANCE X MOROCCANOIL

Introducing Color Rhapsody 10 by Moroccanoil: grey coverage, premium condition and knockout vibrancy in a fraction of the time.

On the set of shooting our 2026 Colour As Performance covershoot, Moroccanoil Global Ambassador Richi Grisillo talks about real results, service boosting and his most requested colour technique.

TJ: Let’s talk about 10-minute colour results. For the sceptics out there, what are some key selling points around the vibrancy, grey coverage and uncompromised integrity of Moroccanoil’s new colour innovation?

RG: Moroccanoil Color Rhapsody 10 is about intelligent formulation. You can achieve high-impact vibrancy, dependable grey coverage and exceptional shine in a fraction of the time, while maintaining the hair’s integrity. The technology allows rapid processing with controlled oxidation, delivering efficiency for the salon without sacrificing luxurious colour results.

TJ: What client profiles are a perfect match for Color Rhapsody 10?

RG: Color Rhapsody 10 suits the modern client who still expects premium results. It’s perfect for grey-coverage maintenance, tonal refreshes between major lightening services, and clients who love seasonal colour shifts with uncompromised results. The versatility across depths and tonal families makes it adaptable to almost every client profile.

TJ: What are some obvious and less obvious ways that Color Rhapsody 10 will boost salon services and revenue?

RG: The obvious benefit is increased efficiency from the 10-minute development time. Less obvious is the impact on retention and rebooking. Faster services encourage consistent maintenance visits and create opportunities for gloss add-ons, basin toning services and styling upgrades. It streamlines workflow, reduces wait times and supports premium pricing because the results remain exceptional. Most importantly, it exceeds a time-conscious client’s expectations.

TJ: What is the mixability of the range like?

RG: The mixability is seamless and supports creativity. Shades interblend effortlessly across cool, neutral and warm colour families, allowing for precise tonal refinement or bespoke layering. It’s flexible enough for subtle colour shifts at the basin or more fashion-driven formulations, making it commercially reliable yet creatively expansive.

TJ: What are the biggest colour trends for Autumn/Winter 2026?

RG: Autumn/Winter 2026 is all about embracing rich dimension and reflective depth. Think lacquered espresso brunettes, smoked caramels, velvety auburns and refined copper tones. Blondes are shifting cooler with pearlescent and violet undertones. Overall, colour feels expensive and controlled, with depth and movement replacing high-contrast extremes. It’s about adding a subtle yet bold detail. Colour is more like an expensive accessory versus a creative statement over the entire head.

TJ: What colour techniques are clients currently requesting on repeat?

RG: Clients are asking for seamless dimension that enhances the shape of their haircut rather than overpowering it. Soft ribbons of lightness through the mid-length and ends, combined with glossy tonal overlays are dominating. The focus is on longevity, polish and low-maintenance regrowth.

For this cover, the palette was about expansion and evolution within the Moroccanoil colour line.

TJ: Talk to us about the colour palette defining our Moroccanoil cover shoot, your choices and any interesting formulations.

RG: For this cover, the palette was about expansion and evolution within the Moroccanoil colour line. We showcased the new Intense Series with a fiery red copper that felt bold yet refined, alongside a subtle lavender-based blonde (10VV/10.22), delivering a cool, pearlescent softness without appearing flat. On our model Riley, we highlighted the new Gold Violet Series, layering warmth and reflection to create a luminous, multi-dimensional blonde.

Technique-wise on Riley, I moved away from classic balayage and introduced a more calico-inspired placement, creating seamless blocks of colour that interlock and build visual interest through contrast and tone rather than heavy diffusion.

Styling was intentionally editorial, European and luxe, with subtle creative nuances in shape and texture, while remaining digestible and achievable for the modern hairdresser.

TJ: What was the hero styling product for the shoot and how did you use it?

RG: Moroccanoil Treatment Mist was the hero, applied through the mid-length and ends to amplify luminosity and enhance the reflective quality of the colour, with a featherweight finish that allowed the hair to come to life. I paired it with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium to maintain a flexible structure. The goal was touchable, camera-ready hair with movement and polish rather than rigidity. My go-tos for editorial tweaks on set are the Moroccanoil Dry Texture Spray and the new Moroccanoil Texture and Volume Powder.

TJ: What’s next for Richi Grisillo and Moroccanoil?

RG: The focus is continuing to champion creativity while creating more opportunities for stylists within the Moroccanoil community, particularly across Australia and New Zealand. A big part of that is strengthening the connection between the brand and the professional hairdresser, ensuring the work we do feels relevant, inspiring and grounded in the realities of the salon. It’s about building a supportive, creative network that encourages artistic expression, education and professional growth across the region.

On a personal level, there are a few exciting things quietly taking shape that continue to push my creative direction forward, but for now I’m enjoying letting the work speak for itself and allowing what’s next to unfold naturally.
