Punta Cana was the picturesque, Caribbean, beachside location for the first ever Joico Global Destination Education event, bringing together over 1000 hair professionals to celebrate all things hair, styling education and the “Culture of JOI”.
With representatives from 28 countries in attendance, it was a week filled with daily classes, covering everything from colour and techniques, to creativity and styling. Keynote speeches and celebrity panels filled in the hours not taken up by scavenger hunts, music performances or nightly pool and beach parties. For those of us not lucky enough to be there, here’s a quick run-down of the week’s educational escapades.
Day 1: JOI-COLOR YOUR WORLD
Guest Artist Ben Mollin conducted a masterclass featuring Vero K-PAK® COLOR techniques from David Murray and Ryan Nicoletti-Dowd, as well as a LumiShine® showcase presented by Celebrity Colorist Denis de Souza, and Guest Artists Melissa Duguay, and Zöe Carpenter.
Then, it was back to Murray and Nicoletti-Dowd to highlight healthy colour in precision formulation.
Colour intensity rounded out the day’s teachings, with creative colour social media stars Phil Ring, Larisa Love and Ricardo Santiago all giving demos on their own tips techniques.
Day 2: UNLOCK YOUR CREATIVITY
International icon Vivienne Mackinder addressed the crowd in an inspirational and informative keynote presentation.
Day 3: TALKING BALYAGE AND BUSINESS
Young guns Amber O’Hara and Jenny Strebe brought their respective skills in the areas of balayage and braiding, showcasing application techniques, “faux balayage” and insider business knowledge alongside Max Maisano.
Day 4: A CUT ABOVE
Richard Mannah transcended hair and fashion to impress in his presentation of high-end hair cutting techniques to create wearable and on trend styles.
Photographer and magazine publisher brother David Mannah was also on hand, preaching about the importance of traditional photo-shoots, while also giving tips on taking perfect photographs.
Surprise guest and charitable persona, Mark Bustos, also gave a deeply personal talk about his own passions and goals.
Day 5: SALON I-DEAS
For the final day’s class, Vivienne Mackinder once again held the room, supported by colourists Phil Ring and Gion Vincent to discuss the 2017 introduction of Joico’s global education platform and her own work at the helm, creating a worldwide training method for all Joico artists and salons.
Rounding out the week’s events was a Social + Celebrity Panel, moderated by Valerie Robinett. This gave the audience insight into the careers and work of Larisa Love, Jenny Strebe, Denis de Souza, Ricardo Santiago, Olivia Smalley, Marisa Marino and Phil Ring as well as provided time for a Q&A session.
To ensure it wasn’t all work and no play, a Fashion Rocks hair show gave Ben Mollen, Larisa Love, Phil Ring and Ricardo Santiago a chance to showcase their work in a different setting.
A scavenger hunt involving Olivia Smalley, Christina Kreitel, Lo Wheeler, Florido and Marisa Marino also gave participants a chance to mingle with their favourite influencers in a fun and competitive way.
After the inaugural success of #DestinationJoi2018, it’s no surprise Global Destination Education looks set to return in 2020.
