Stepping onto the set of their very first shoot is a moment most young stylists dream of, a real ‘pinch me’ moment that often sparks a lifelong love of editorial styling. But how does one arrive here, and open up the exciting experience of working on an editorial for themselves? Enter JOICO, who made this career-defining opportunity a reality for the four talented winners of JOICO VISION MASTERCLASS.
Tasked with devising a shoot concept and three-page storyboard outlining their creative vision, four talented stylists were hand selected from across Australia and New Zealand by none other than our very own M Division Creative Directors David Mannah and Lauren King, alongside Sabre Haircare Education Manager Duncan Richards.
The prize? Taking part in an exclusive photoshoot masterclass with David Mannah and Hair Mentor Carolyn Gahan, as well as having their finished collection printed in THE JOURNAL Magazine (which you can find right here).
Stephanie Mullins, Leanne Kay, Tamika Murray and Jade Spink impressed the judging panel with their inspired mood boards and interpretations of current trends, winning their way along to this money can’t buy experience. With JOICO products on hand – including the iconic JOICO Stylers and game-changing Color Intensity, Lumishine and Blonde Life Lightener colour ranges – the lucky winners were well-equipped to make all of their editorial dreams come true. “This opportunity was amazing, and I’m so inspired for the future now,” says Tamika of her experience with JOICO onset.
“The JOICO VISION MASTERCLASS got me out of the salon, and experiencing exciting new things,” agrees Jade. “It was such a wonderful experience!”
For Leanne, it was about working alongside other creatives and seeking inspiration from one another that proved her personal highlight. “I always find it really inspirational to work with a team that’s not necessarily the salon you’re from or someone that you’re always working with,” she explains. “It’s fun to have a bunch of fresh faces, have a laugh, collaborate together and get really refreshing ideas from one another.”
And as for Steph? The VISION MASTERCLASS has sparked that aforementioned lifelong love of editorial styling. “What was my favourite experience from the shoot? Everything,” she exclaims of the experience. “I couldn’t pin down one thing, and I was shocked at the whole experience. It’s been amazing, and now I just want to keep doing it and doing it!”
Now step behind the scenes and take a peek at the incredible masterclass that was. A huge congratulations to Stephanie, Leanne, Tamika and Jade on their first steps into the editorial world, thanks to JOICO.
