Pantone’s Colour of the Year remains one of the pivotal indicators of key trends that one can expect to see requested in salon, gracing world runways and even dictating both interior and graphic design trends for the next calendar year. The cultural relevance of this hotly-anticipated colour announcement simply cannot be understanded.

2022’s crowned colour, Very Peri, “… Reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer,” Vice President of the Pantene Colour Institute Laurie Pressman says of the calming periwinkle blue shade. “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Colour of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us.”

This delicate mix of red and blue hues lends itself perfectly to a balance of warmth and coolness that no doubt will be in high demand for those clients looking to adopt a periwinkle colour in salon. “Very Peri delicately mixes reds and blues to create a periwinkle vanish,” Brooks & Brooks Artistic Director Marlon Hawkins says of interpreting the shade. “This mix of cool and warm makes this shade unique, and I love it.”

Here, Marlon takes us through how to get the Very Peri look this winter. Now this is what we call the ultimate way to rock a blue hue this winter.

  1. Get a clean canvas with optimum condition, starting with L’Oreal Metal Detox to neutralise any metal build up on the hair to stop breakage and give me 100% guaranteed colour results.
  2. For the global pre-lighter, use L’Oreal Blond Studio 8 levels and lift for 50 mins. It’s important to pre-tone the hair helping get a perfect target shade (Marlon uses Loreal Dia-Light 10.02 to neutralise and vanish the raw lifted blonde).
  3. The colour formula for Very Peri? Majirel glow, L.22 (18g), Majirel Blue (2g) and Clear (10g), developed for 20 mins. Glow has a beautiful shimmery finish that really brings this Pantone to life.
  4. Apply Redken One United and L’Oreal Tecniart Pli, and wrap dried the hair with a paddle brush making sure there are no partings in the hair while smoothing out the length and ends. To finish, gently run the ghd Platinum iron throughout for a polished finish.
