BEAUTY SCHOOL DROP INS: Industry Skin Secrets Revealed

They’re the Australian hairdressing industry’s leading ladies who, despite jamming itineraries around the world, glow like hydrated goddesses from the inside out. Lauren McCowan, Jayne Wild, Paloma Rose Garcia and Sarah Laidlaw share their daily routines, ultimate treatments, luxe and less hero products for us all to benefit in the heat of the silly season. Notepads (slash iPads) at the ready …

LAUREN MCCOWAN // Creative Director, Haircare Australia

TJ: Your daily beauty routine?

LM: I layer and feed my skin the same way I do my hair. I always start by buffing the dead skin cells away with Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant, then prep my skin with La Mer The Mist as a toner. I then use a rich hydrating cream, switching between La Mer Moisturizing Cream and Laneige Water Sleep Mask. Finally an eye cream or serum. I don’t wear a lot of foundation so I like my skin to look and feel as good as it can.

TJ: Hero beauty products?

LM: Biologique Recherche P50 lotion is life changing, as are Dr. Dennis Gross daily Alpha peels. I also am in love with REN Glycol lactic Radiance Renewal Mask – it is phenomenal.

TJ: Your ultimate beauty service(s)?

LM: I love Fran at Miss Franc in Paddington, she provides the best facial treatments and her skincare edit is quality …  I always leave feeling a million dollars. I am new to injectables and while I’ve only ventured as far as botox, Fran’s approach is ever subtle for a perfectly natural result, every time. She believes in beauty and balance, and it shows. In New York I always frequent Great Jones Day Spa – the best massage I’ve ever had.

TJ: Can’t travel without beauty product?

LM: La Mer The Mist – my skin cannot live without it. I use it all the time to keep my skin treatments fresh and active, as well as refresh my makeup over the day. I will not walk on a plane without it, and I can see and feel the difference in my skin immediately. Well worth the regular investment.

TJ: Favourite luxury beauty product and why?

LM: It’s super extravagant but La Prairie Cellular concentrate Pure Gold is amazing. It really revitalizes the skin and you can feel it working. Insanely expensive though so I just give it a wave when I walk past it.

TJ: Favourite inexpensive beauty product and why?

LM: Patchology Eye Revive 5 Minute Flash Patches are affordable and give amazing results especially for tired eyes and dark circles … or if you’ve had way too much of a good night. You get 30 hydrogels in one pack so you get a lot of use from them, they are soaked in collagen and caffeine to brighten, tighten and rehydrate when you need a quick pick me up.

JAYNE WILD // Owner of Wild Life, Milson’s Point, Multiple Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year

TJ: Your daily beauty routine?

JW: I have been using Osmosis Skincare for many years. It’s a holistic range all about results. Daily I use their Enzyme Cleanser before applying my serums, pre-makeup (and again at night). I also use EyEnvy lash serum morning and night … AMAZING (and I put it on my brows too!).

TJ: Hero beauty products?

JW: I love a red lip and for that I go M.A.C Patent Polish Lip in a ‘reddy’ shade, super moisturising and I find it doesn’t crack.

TJ: Your ultimate beauty service(s)?

JW: I love a relaxing facial, especially the Osmosis Vitamin A Facial. It tingles a bit and leaves skin super soft … helps with my fine lines and lightening any pigment.

TJ: Can’t travel without beauty product?

JW: Osmosis Quench Plus and EyEnvy.

TJ: Favourite luxury beauty product and why?

JW: My favourite scents by Jo Malone or Miu Miu.

TJ: Favourite inexpensive beauty product and why?

JW: Vitamin A and DNA Osmosis serums.

PALOMA ROSE GARCIA // Oribe Editorial Director + Owner of PALOMA Salon

TJ: Your daily beauty routine?

PRG: I use the Essential Six products by Rationale. Morning is Serum 1 (Immununologist) followed by Serum 2 (Antioxidant) then moisturiser, eye cream and 50+ sunscreen – all applied to face, neck and chest. In the evening I cleanse, use Serum 5 (Catalyst) for cell repair, moisturise then eye cream.

TJ: Hero beauty products?

PRG: It’s hard to say with Rationale because I truly love all their products. I would say Serum 5 as it’s super active and I see huge results.

TJ: Your ultimate beauty service(s)?

PRG: Rationale flagship salon in Woollahra. I go once a month religiously for light therapy and a peel. I don’t do a huge amount of things for myself between running my business and caring for my two boys. So this is sacred time for myself which I value greatly.

TJ: Can’t travel without beauty product?

PRG: All of them! When I am flying overseas, I cleanse when changing connecting flights. Otherwise throughout the flight I re-apply my moisturiser and spritz my face continually with a hydration spray.

TJ: Favourite luxury beauty product and why?

PRG: Anything Rationale! And I love an SKII mask before an event.

TJ: Favourite inexpensive beauty product and why?

PRG: Lanolin for my lips! It’s literally $2.99 for a big tub. My whole team is into it too.

SARAH LAIDLAW // Australian Session Stylist and AHFA Makeup Artist of  the Year, 2017.

TJ: Your daily beauty routine?

SL: I use the Microfibre Face Halo pads to remove makeup and then DMK products. My skin is highly reactive and goes red or breaks out with most products, so I’m super careful with what I put on my skin.

TJ: Hero beauty products?

SL: On clients, I love masks and eye masks to smooth, hydrate and plump the skin. My current favourites are the Freezeframe Revitaleyes Mask for a moisture surge that really helps with dark circles and fine lines …  the fish tail shape wraps around the eye so it treats the entire area, not just underneath. My favourite mask at the moment is the two-phase Hydrate & Nourish by Erno Laszlo. It makes the skin feel 10 years younger.

TJ: Your ultimate beauty service(s)?

SL: I am obsessed with the Enzyme Therapy Treatment Facial by Anna at DMK, Crows Nest. It’s all about making your skin work correctly as a functioning organ of the body … and it’s the single thing I’ve found that makes an actual difference to my skin.

TJ: Can’t travel without beauty product?

SL: Skin oils for aboard a flight (did you know an average aeroplane cabin is only 12% humidity which is lower than the Sahara Desert?). Eye drops and Lanolips 101 Superbalm for lips is essential.

TJ: Favourite luxury beauty product and why?

SL: I love the Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield. It’s an invisible skin perfector that acts as a makeup primer while blurring fine lines and pores. It contains an SPF and leaves the surface of the skin velvety. Can’t do without this one.

TJ: Favourite inexpensive beauty product and why?

SL: Lanolips 101 Superbalm. It’s 100% natural, super hydrating and can be used everywhere to rehydrate and heal any skin dryness.
