TECH: 9 THINGS WE’VE LEARNT ABOUT THE NEW DYSON SUPERSONIC PRO

To celebrate the launch of the all new Supersonic Pro (an update on the ever popular Supersonic hair dryer) the innovators at Dyson hosted a unique hair science event, bringing together a troupe of ambassadors, stylists and media for a day of education, discourse and demonstration.

Following a panel discussion led by a team of experts (including Dyson Design Engineer Fred Howe, Supersonic stylist, lead trainer Amy Johnson, and Dyson ambassadors Renya Xydis and Peter Thomsen), attendees were lead through a series of informative segments, each illuminating the myriad advantages of the brand’s newest offering. Here are 9 of the key product facts we took home following the day’s learning.

IT'S LIGHTWEIGHT, COMPACT AND ERGONOMICAL

Both the Supersonic and Supersonic Pro have been custom engineered for balance, with the new model boasting a weight of 659g for prolonged usability and increased function. “I’ve loved it since the day I received it,” enthused Session Stylist and Valonz Owner Renya Xydis.

“My hands were in such pain with previous hairdryers, but this just felt comfortable. When I flip from my left to right hand, it doesn’t hurt my wrist – it’s the perfect size and weight for my work.” The dryer’s short barrel makes it incredibly easy to manoeuvre, and its small stature means it can be used for hours on end.

IT'S BACKED BY RESEARCH

“7.5 million pounds are invested into research and development every week,” revealed Dyson Design Engineer Fred Howe. “On the Supersonic, we have a core body of engineers, with about thirteen specialist teams (including acoustic engineers, thermodynamics, microbiology, hair scientists) coming together to contribute their specialities to the product.”

“There’s so much money and research thats gone into the development of the Supersonic Pro,” said L’Oreal Professionnel Ambassador Peter Thomsen. “It goes hand in hand with new developments in colour technology, ensuring  hair condition is preserved [from all angles].”

IT'S QUIET

Visualise a light hum amidst an often deafening swell of salon sounds.

“The sound is minute! I can wake up at 5am to dry my hair and not worry about waking anyone up.” mused Renya.

Need we say more?

IT'S POWERFUL

Don’t be fooled by its miniature size; this wonder dryer owns a compact V9 motor (artfully embedded in its handle) drying hair six times faster than its market competitors. The Supersonic Pro delivers fast and powerful airflow, further amplified by the brand’s heavily researched and tested Air Multiplier technology, which sees a focused jet of air precisely dispensed for simultaneous drying and styling. The Dyson Professional concentrator has been designed alongside a team of expert stylists (including 4x British Hairdresser of the Year Akin Konizi) and can be easily attached to deliver a precise blade of air, for increased control and manipulation.

IT WON'T DAMAGE YOUR HAIR

As with the brand’s previous model, air temperature is measured every 20 seconds ensuring it’s kept to an optimum heat level that won’t dry out or damage your strands. “When we buy face cream, we want to know what’s inside it; we need to do our research when it comes to our styling tools,” said Renya.

“All of the elements in this updated blow dryer are so good for us; it’s not going to hurt your hair. It’s important to use the best products in your hair – not just product wise, tool wise too.” Hair is beautifully buoyant, with the dryer’s natural extreme heat protection preserving the hair’s natural shine.

IT'S CHIC AND LUXURIOUS

In the words of Queen Renya, “It’s a gorgeous product.” Who wouldn’t want one of these bad boys stacked atop their salon trolley? The epitome of luxury, each dryer boasts a sleek, matte finish and unique design, making it the perfect accompaniment to any hairdresser’s kit.

“Dyson are known for their luxe products, and the Supersonic Pro is of course no exception,” said Peter. I’ve actually had quite a few celebrity clients who’ve asked me if I have a Dyson – they’re educating us! As professionals we need to look at what tools we use, and how we can educate ourselves and others. It’s all revolutionary; it’s an exciting time!”

IT'S BACKED BY THE GREATS

Don’t take our word for it. Take a scroll through the feeds of Jen Atkin, Pete Thomsen and Renya Xydis for photographic evidence of this nifty dryer’s supersonic styling prowess.

“It’s so nice to have a tool that complements the colouring process,” says Peter. “Just as ammonia free colour and bonding products protect the hair’s integrity, we now have a tool looks after the condition of the hair. Both stylists and clients feel the difference – hair is smoother, with more shine.”

“We all want things that are instant, fast and are going to work,” and the Dyson Supersonic Pro provides just that.
